Chess
A sport that has grown vastly over the past few years, PHSG boasts numerous players advancing to the Gauteng Individual Chess Championships each year. The league is always tough, with the winner of the league often only being decided in the final round. PHSG has two senior teams and a development team.
Basketball
The Basketball teams are exciting to watch. Their passion for the game and hunger to win are evident in the way they play and approach each game. They have made it to the finals of the Pretoria league for multiple years in a row. PHSG has two teams, an A Team and a B Team per age group.
Athletics
The Athletics team participates in various leagues and partners with Pretoria Boys High School in the Pretoria league. Throughout the years, PHSG has had success in the Johannesburg league in the 3rd and 4th term, both individually and as a team.
Cross Country
The Cross-Country team competes in the Pretoria and Johannesburg leagues. The races are run in the 2nd and 3rd terms. The seniors and juniors run at the same races and push each other to new heights. The team trains at PHSG around the school and the cross-country route.
Equestrian
Equestrian is a year-round sport which is enjoyed by all who participate. The riders are passionate about their sport and their horses. In the past, the learners have always been successful at the qualifiers, often advancing to the Gauteng North qualifiers. Some of the riders progress to the SANESA National Championships. The school does not provide horses to the riders. The learners are advised to have their own coaches.
Hockey
Hockey is a fun, fast-paced team sport with matches in term 2. Training is year-round with pre-season playing an important role in the sport. The 1st team competes in the annual National All Girls’ Schools Festival as well as the St Mary’s Festival. Each year, numerous girls are selected for the Gauteng North teams and every so often learners are selected to the SA Schools team. Three Old Girls are in the senior national side.
Netball
The Netball Team compete in various tournaments as well as the Jubilee League in Pretoria. We compete in various derbies and festivals throughout the year and the highlight is the National All Girls’ Schools Festival. Each year there are girls in various age groups who are selected to represent Gauteng in respective teams. Netball is played throughout the year starting with pre-season training and ending with post-season training. Netball has three or four teams per age group and continues to grow.
We are fortunate to have some of the best coaches in the province. Our first team coach and expert training coaches all currently play netball themselves in teams such as Jaguars Netball team that competes in the TNL as well as TUKS netball.
Squash
The Squash teams are lifted to new heights each year. The two squash courts on the school property are ideal for anyone to learn how to play the game with learners being able to watch the game from the stands. The 1st Team competes in the National All Girls’ Schools Festival and play with grit and determination. There is beginner squash for those that would like to learn this exciting, fast-paced game.
The Senior team is coached by Mwansa Chileshe and the Juniors by Kundanji Kalengo, who is the number 1 Zambian player. Both coaches have represented their country in international tournaments.
Swimming
Swimming is a popular summer sport at PHSG. Practises are well attended and we cater for a variety of swimmers. Our A, B and C Swimming teams participate in the Pretoria league galas with the highlight of our competitive season being the A, B and C Inter-High Galas held annually in February. In addition, our A team participates in the National Aquatics Festival held at the end of January. Over and above our competitive season, we offer non-team and beginner swimming sessions.
Tennis
Tennis is played throughout the year with senior fixtures in the 1st term and junior fixtures in the 2nd term. There are beginner squads to advanced squads with a place for everyone.
Volleyball
Volleyball is an exciting team sport that we offer from term 1 to term 4.
Term 1 is our busiest time of the year as we have league and the Fourways tournament. In 2015 and 2018 our U16A won the league.
The rest of the year we have friendlies, the Tuks tournament and the U19’s have the annual ISSA tournament in Mafikeng.
Soccer
The anticipation is palpable as the JVW Women's League gears up for another thrilling season of soccer action. Building on the success of last year's playoffs, this year promises to be even more exhilarating with the inclusion of four new teams. From the nail-biting goals to the awe-inspiring saves, this season promises to be a rollercoaster of emotions for players and fans alike. The JVW Women's League continues to be a driving force in promoting women's soccer, providing a platform for talent to shine and inspiring a new generation of aspiring athletes.
Water Polo
A physically demanding, yet thrilling team sport, water polo is played in terms 1 and 4, with land training in the colder months. The teams train hard and play with passion. Each year, a number of learners are selected for the provincial teams.
Bootcamp
Bootcamp at PHSG is an all year round activity that offers a combination of cardiovascular and strength training, finishing off with a thorough stretching session. The mind and body are challenged as learners participate in a full body workout that consists of high and low intensity exercises, as well as muscle specific training. Learners push themselves to their maximum abilities here and are able to see results in their strength and fitness training regimes. Along with all the sweating, lots of fun is had and good fitness friendships are formed.
