What defines the Cultural Department at PHSG is its sheer variety and richness. At Girls’ High we believe in enriching and inspiring our girls as they journey towards adulthood, by providing them with as broad a range of cultural activities as possible.

Our passion for music is beautifully demonstrated by our renowned Senior Girls’ Choir, who achieved a Platinum Award for Advanced Choirs at the 2013 ATKV Afrikaanse Meisieskore Afdeling. Recently, the school developed a structured Orchestra programme, funded by the School Governing Body, to identify and train girls with musical ability. These girls then progress and mature to become full members of our 50-piece orchestra.

Both these groups collaborate each year with our 'brother' school, Pretoria Boys High School, and neighbouring schools, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool, to present the much-acclaimed Four Schools Concert. This remarkable event boasts a combined choir of 450 harmonious voices and 110 talented instrumentalists. It is a truly uplifting experience and a tribute to the committed staff that have produced it for the past 25 years.

Because of the talent that flows into Girls’ High each year, we have created smaller, specialised musical and choral groups, such as the Saxophone Ensemble, the Woodwind Ensemble, the Windband, the String Ensemble and our very own Big Band. All these groups, including the Rhythmony Acapella Folk Group, combine annually to present a dazzling Night at the Proms to the school community.

The school is also home to a ferociously incisive debating team, which has been well-placed at both Provincial and National levels. This group has a proud history of challenging their opponents’ ideas, developing persuasive arguments and presenting these with panache, insight and conviction.

The school also hosts a Public Speaking Festival and has encouraged many a diffident speaker to stand in front of an audience with confidence and aplomb.

The annual House Plays Festival, in which our ten school Houses write, direct and produce a play, is one of the highlights of the first term. Not only do budding actresses magically transform into radiant stars, but our girls hone their skills in every aspect of theatre production. This is a grand, theatrical team effort. An outside adjudicator usually sings praises and finds our standards comparable to those of university level.

We also team up with Pretoria Boys High School to produce musicals. The girls, guided by the staff, are involved in every aspect of production – from choreography to costumes, from stage props to singing, sound and lighting.

The creativity and depth of the Art Department are evident in our regular art exhibitions. From printmaking, jewellery, etching, pottery, sculpture and photography, to graphic design, painting and drawing, a creative, energised hub is to be found in the little building next to the Music Centre.

At PHSG, we strive to nurture creativity and enrich the imagination.
