At Girls’ High, we believe that academic work is only part of what makes for an accomplished, balanced young woman, and to this end we offer our girls a wide variety of sporting activities; namely, Athletics, Basketball, Chess, Cross-Country, Springboard Diving, Tennis, Equestrian, Hockey, Lifesaving, Netball, Squash, Swimming, Volleyball, Water Polo, Aerobics, and Soccer. We also provide the only Girls’ Water Polo and Springboard Diving teams in Pretoria.

In November 2013, the PHSG's Sports Department implemented a Talent Identification Programme for our Grade 8s. The programme provides a basis for predicting candidates who stand a reasonable chance of succeeding in a specific sport. This also offers each girl the opportunity to unlock talent that they were possibly unaware of, and to ensure that no hidden talent goes unnoticed. The school is tremendously excited about the programme as we believe it has assisted with the development of the girls, and will contribute to improved performance and sporting success at the school.

PHSG has a long legacy of sporting success, both locally and internationally. Lauren Pijper made the U18A SA Hockey Team, with Keitu Salagae joining the U18 B SA Hockey Team in 2013. Chelsea Hayes was part of the SA Women’s Life Saving Team at the Commonwealth Games. Our Squash team has won the Northern Gauteng Top Schools Tournament for 2012 and 2013 and achieved excellent results at the SA Top Schools Competition.

Sporting highlights each year include the Midmar Mile swim, the National Girls’ Schools’ Aquatics Festival, Eunice Derby Day (Cross-Country, Chess, Hockey, Netball, Squash and Tennis), the Basketball Tournament in Pietermaritzburg, Volleyball ISSA Mafikeng Festival, and the National Girls’ Schools’ Festival.

The school also has a state-of-the-art water-based Hockey Astroturf. This is designed to international FIH standards with floodlights suited for international practice level and for competitive play at school and club level. The warm-up area is constructed of the same material and includes a watering system. This will ensure that the school has the opportunity to nurture and develop the wealth of hockey talent amongst our girls.

At Grade 8 and 9 levels, all girls are required to participate in extramural activities, which include a wide variety of Sports, Clubs and Societies. This enables each girl to engage socially and meaningfully with her peers, to participate in team efforts, to forge friendships and to create enduring memories. Sport is a superb unifier and instills a tremendous sense of loyalty and identity in all our girls.
